An Arctic Snow and Ice Control employee welds a snow plow in Kankakee, Illinois

An Arctic Snow and Ice Control employee welds behind safety curtains while manufacturing snow plows at the company's manufacturing facility in Kankakee, Illinois.  I was shooting a workforce development story for Images of Kankakee River Valley Magazine. Not only is this not an easy topic to illustrate, but I was not having any luck getting local companies to call me back.

A student walks through the Technology building at Kankakee Community College

A student walks through the Technology building on the campus of Kankakee Community College in Kankakee, Illinois. I had the challenge of photographing a college campus in early Spring before the leaves and greenery have had a chance to appear. I tried every possible angle from outside of the buildings while trying not to show bare trees or brown grass.

Basketball on the beach in Ft. Lauderale, Florida

A group of kids play some half-court basketball on the beach as the sun rises in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.  After a full day of clouds and rain the day before, I was up bright and early and hoping for some sunshine. I was starting to worry, since the morning started out cloudy again, but as soon as I arrived at the beach, the clouds began to break. I almost wrecked my car when I saw the sun poking through the clouds as these guys played basketball. I jumped out of my car and shot a few frames before another set of clouds moved in.

International Swimming Hall of Fame in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida

A swimmer practices for competition at the International Swimming Hall of Fame pool in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. As a swimmer throughout high school and for one year in college, I was excited to find out that a swimming hall of fame exists. Obviously, since I didn't know about it, I'm not in it! Nevertheless, I walked over to check it out and noticed that they had a pool with swimmers practicing. Even better yet, they had a row of open-air windows where I could shoot from, so that the lane lines stacked up nicely.

New West Palm Beach Waterfront

Two girls cling to eachother while trying to stay dry as jets shoot water into the air at a fountain in the newly re-developed West Palm Beach Waterfront in downtown West Palm Beach, Florida.  The girls had to time their run to the middle of the fountain between water cycles to avoid getting soaked so that their friend could take their picture. They seemed to have started a trend as other tourists lined up to attempt the same photo opportunity.  This photo was part of a Livability.com photo shoot in South Florida.

Skimboarding on Sand Palm Beach, FL

Skimboarders practice jumping off of a makeshift ramp made of sand on the beach in Palm Beach, Florida.  When I arrived at the beach, it was extremely windy with clouds moving in three different directions. There were lots of people at the beach, but nobody was swimming. Then I noticed a sign posted by the lifeguards which read, "No Swimming- Extremely dangerous rip currents, Sharks! and Man-of-war jellyfish."  It was a deadly enough combination to make most people, myself included, not enter the water.

Off-roading in Victor Valley, California

Members of the Victor Valley 4-Wheelers Club make their way up the side of a mountain while off-roading at Silverwood Lake State Recreation Area near Hesperia, California.  The Victor Valley region has some of the best off-roading opportunities in the world, including, "The Hammers," which was built by the club. It was great to get off the beaten path and climb to the top of a mountain in a modified jeep while photographing a landscape that many people never get to see.

A horse in the water in Victorville, California

A horse walks through a stream at Mojave Narrows Park in Victorville, California. I was surprised to find so many lakes, rivers and streams in the middle of the Mojave Desert. I was working on a photo essay about desert beauty when I came across this horse playing in the water at Mojave Narrows Park, which is situated along the ancient riverbed of the Mojove River.  During warmer months, people ride the horses at the park's stables, but during the cooler months, the horses roam around the park playing and grazing on grass.

Blue Cross Blue Shield Chattanooga, Tennessee

A new Blue Cross/Blue Shield facility sits on a hill above downtown as traffic moves along W. 4th Street in Chattanooga, Tennessee. I had an assignment to photograph this building for a story about Healthcare for the Southeast Resource magazine. Because I didn't have permission to shoot from their property, and security was very heavy, I decided to shoot the building from a distance and try to capture show some of the downtown environment.  This was my third attempt at this photo, since it was raining heavily my first two days in Chattanooga.

Sharks at the Tennessee Aquarium

A pair of sharks swims past the Secret Reef exhibit at the Tennessee Aquarium in downtown Chattanooga, Tennessee.  Aquariums always provide interesting photo oportunities, especially on a rainy day. The Tennessee Aquarium, which is the second largest freshwater aquarium in the world, is also home to an ocean aquarium exhibit where the sharks are located. This was shot for the Southeast Resource magazine.
